ATA Taxi Meters in Ireland — Your Questions Answered

Everything you need to know about ATA taximeters, Applus verification, installation, and pricing — straight from us.

Approved Models & Compliance
What ATA taxi meters are approved for use in Ireland? +
All ATA taximeters supplied by us are ready for use in Ireland, including the PRIMUS RS-01 mirror meter, the PRIMUS S-01 dashboard meter, the PRIMUS MIRROR 5-button model, and the classic GLEIKE. Each meter is pre-programmed with the current Irish national tariff and is verified by an Applus-authorised verifier. Once the meter is installed, a taximeter sealing appointment must be booked and completed within the specified time frame.
Applus Verification
How do I get my taxi meter verified in Ireland (Applus verification)? +
All taxi meters in Ireland must be verified by NSAI Legal Metrology through Applus, the authorised verifier. The process works as follows: first, your meter is programmed with the current approved tariff by a trained installer, who then submits your online TTI (Taximeter Trader Information) form — this must be completed before your appointment or the verification cannot proceed. You then book your verification appointment through legalmetrology.ie or by calling 01 413 5951. Call us on +353 1 910 7583 or +353 87 283 5120 and we'll take care of the programming.
How often does my taxi meter need to be verified? +
Your meter must be verified only when a specific event occurs: when it is first installed in a licensed taxi; whenever a new fare is programmed or the existing programme is updated (for example after an NTA tariff change); whenever a repair, alteration or adjustment requires the security seal to be broken or removed; whenever the meter is transferred to another vehicle; or if the tamper-proof seal is broken for any reason. Pulsar Europe can re-programme ahead of a fare change — call +353 1 910 7583 or +353 87 283 5120 to arrange. Not sure how this differs from your vehicle inspection? See our guide: Suitability Inspection vs Taximeter Sealing.
Choosing the Right Meter
What is the best ATA taxi meter for Irish taxis in 2025? +
Ireland's most popular ATA taxi meter is currently the PRIMUS RS-01 mirror mount — and it has also become the standout choice for EV taxi drivers making the switch to electric. It clips directly onto your existing rear-view mirror with no brackets or permanent fixings, features an anti-glare multicolour LCD display, and automatically controls your roof sign. Critically for EV drivers, it requires no complex engine wiring, doesn't interfere with OBD systems, and draws minimal current from the 12V auxiliary circuit — making it genuinely EV-compatible across all major models including the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3, BYD ATTO 3 and Toyota bZ4X. For drivers who prefer a dashboard mount, the PRIMUS S-01 is the top choice. Both are available directly from us at taximeter.ie.
What is the difference between the PRIMUS RS-01 and the PRIMUS S-01? +
The PRIMUS RS-01 is a mirror-mount meter — it clips onto your existing rear-view mirror and is the most popular choice for drivers who want a clean, uncluttered dashboard. The PRIMUS S-01 is a traditional dashboard-mount meter, preferred by drivers who want the meter in their direct eyeline on the dash. Both control your roof sign, and both come pre-programmed with the Irish national tariff.
Pricing & Payment
How much does an ATA taxi meter cost in Ireland? +
The PRIMUS RS-01 mirror meter is extremely affordable and represents excellent value for Irish taxi drivers, with the PRIMUS S-01 dashboard meter at a similar level. Every meter comes programmed to the current Irish national tariff. We also offer flexible payment options to spread the cost of your equipment — contact us on +353 1 910 7583 or +353 87 283 5120 for a full quote including installation.
Do you offer payment plans for taxi equipment? +
Yes. Pulsar Europe offers flexible payment options to help spread the cost of your taximeter, printer, roof sign and accessories. Contact us on +353 1 910 7583 or +353 87 283 5120 or use our online enquiry form and we'll put together a package that suits your budget.
Installation
Can I install an ATA taxi meter myself, or do I need a professional installer? +
Some ATA models like the plug-and-play PRIMUS RS-01 are designed for easy self-installation. However, for your meter to be legal in Ireland, it must be programmed with the current national tariff and then verified by Applus Legal Metrology — and this verification requires the meter to have been installed and calibrated correctly. We work with a nationwide network of trained taxi meter installers across Ireland, from Dublin and Cork to Galway and Limerick. We recommend using a qualified installer to ensure your setup passes Applus verification first time.
How do I find a taxi meter installer near me in Ireland? +
Pulsar Europe maintains a network of authorised ATA taxi meter installers across Ireland — in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford and beyond. Call us on +353 1 910 7583 or +353 87 283 5120 and we'll connect you with your nearest installer. You can also visit our Installer Network page for more details.
Suitability Inspection vs Taximeter Sealing
What is the difference between the suitability inspection and taximeter sealing? +
They are two completely separate appointments run by two different bodies. The suitability inspection is the National Transport Authority (NTA) checking whether your vehicle is fit to carry passengers — age, size, condition, cleanliness, accessibility and that your roof sign, door branding and licence disc are properly displayed. It is tied to your vehicle licence. Taximeter verification (sealing) is NSAI Legal Metrology, through Applus, checking that your meter is accurate and fitting a tamper-proof seal. It is tied to the fare programmed into your meter. Passing one does not cover the other. See our full guide: Suitability Inspection vs Taximeter Sealing.
Is the suitability inspection the same as getting my meter sealed? +
No. They are often confused because both can take place at Applus / NCT-branded centres and both are needed to work legally — but they are separate checks. The suitability inspection is about the car; sealing is about the meter. A car can pass its suitability inspection and still be illegal to work if the meter isn't sealed to the current fare, and the other way around.
Do I need both the suitability inspection and taximeter sealing? +
Yes. Your vehicle needs its NTA suitability inspection when it is first licensed as an SPSV and again before each licence renewal. Separately, your meter must be verified and sealed by Applus whenever a specific event occurs: when it is first installed in a licensed taxi; whenever a new fare is programmed or the existing programme is updated; whenever a repair, alteration or adjustment requires the security seal to be broken; whenever the meter is transferred to another vehicle; or if the seal is broken for any reason. We programme it and issue your TTI form — call +353 1 910 7583 or +353 87 283 5120.
